Why Is It Called Al-Fatiha?

Al-Fatiha means "The Opening" โ€” it opens the Quran, and it opens (begins) every prayer. It has many other names:

  • Umm Al-Quran (ุฃู… ุงู„ู‚ุฑุขู†) โ€” "Mother of the Quran" because it contains the essence of the entire Quran
  • Umm Al-Kitab โ€” "Mother of the Book"
  • Al-Sab'ul Mathani โ€” "The Seven Oft-Repeated Verses" โ€” mentioned in Quran 15:87
  • Al-Ruqyah โ€” "The Cure" โ€” used for spiritual healing

Tafsir (Explanation) Verse by Verse

Verse 1 โ€” Bismillah

"In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"

The word Allah (ุงู„ู„ู‡) is the unique proper name of God โ€” it has no plural and no feminine form, unlike words like "God" in English. Al-Rahman (ุงู„ุฑุญู…ู†) refers to the immense mercy of Allah that encompasses everything in creation. Al-Raheem (ุงู„ุฑุญูŠู…) refers to the specific, ongoing mercy that Allah bestows upon the believers.

Verse 2 โ€” Al-Hamdulillah

"All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all the worlds"

Al-Hamd (ุงู„ุญู…ุฏ) means complete, perfect praise โ€” encompassing gratitude, love, and glorification. Rabb (ุฑุจ) means Lord, Master, and Sustainer โ€” not just a creator who leaves His creation, but One who nurtures, maintains, and governs all that exists.

Verse 5 โ€” Iyyaka Na'budu

"You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help"

This verse is the heart of Al-Fatiha and the heart of Islam. It establishes Tawheed โ€” pure monotheism. The word order in Arabic (placing "You alone" before the verb) emphasises exclusivity: not just "we worship You" but "only You do we worship."

Verse 6โ€“7 โ€” The Supplication

"Guide us to the straight path โ€” the path of those You have blessed..."

The straight path (Al-Sirat Al-Mustaqeem) is the path of Islam, the path of the Prophets, the righteous, the martyrs, and the pious. We ask Allah for this guidance in every prayer โ€” at least 17 times a day in the five compulsory prayers.

Virtues of Surah Al-Fatiha

The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Quran." (Musnad Ahmad)

  1. No prayer is valid without it: The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book." (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
  2. It is a conversation with Allah: Allah says in a Hadith Qudsi: "I have divided the prayer (Al-Fatiha) between Myself and My servant into two halves..." (Sahih Muslim)
  3. It is a cure: The Companions used it as a ruqyah (spiritual healing) by the permission of the Prophet ๏ทบ.

How Many Times Do We Recite Al-Fatiha?

  • Fajr: 2 rak'ahs ร— 1 = 2 times
  • Dhuhr: 4 rak'ahs ร— 1 = 4 times
  • Asr: 4 ร— 1 = 4 times
  • Maghrib: 3 ร— 1 = 3 times
  • Isha: 4 ร— 1 = 4 times

Total: 17 times minimum in the five obligatory prayers. If you add the sunnah prayers, you recite it even more frequently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is Bismillah part of Surah Al-Fatiha?
Scholars differ on this. The majority opinion is that Bismillah is a verse that begins each surah but is not counted as an independent verse of Al-Fatiha. However, it is recited as part of the surah in prayer.

Q: Should I recite Al-Fatiha aloud or silently?
In prayers where the imam recites aloud (Fajr, Maghrib, Isha), follow the imam's recitation. When praying alone, recite aloud in Fajr, Maghrib, and Isha, and silently in Dhuhr and Asr.

Q: Can non-Arabic speakers recite it in translation?
The Quran must be recited in Arabic in prayer. Learning the Arabic recitation of Al-Fatiha is obligatory for every Muslim who prays.
